Arusha Lutheran Medical Center derives a significant part of its annual budget from contributions by individuals, churches, hospitals and other organizations. Without these contributions ALMC could not continue its mission in Tanzania. Contributions may be made to the ALMC general fund or specific programs (see below and the 'Special Services' section of this website). All contributions are used for direct patient care.

Summarized below are several of the many exciting projects at ALMC in need of support.  Your kind and generous contribution will be greatly appreciated.

africa septpatient04 018REHABILITATIVE SURGERY:  Our largest project is to provide surgery to children suffering from debilitating orthopedic problems or in need of plastic surgery for cleft lips or palates.  We provide free surgical care to over 450 children a year who have club foot, deformed limbs, burn contractures, or a cleft lip or palate. Our program for these children begins with mobile outreach into the distant communities to identify those in need and convince their parents to trust our program to care for them.  We bring them into our childrens' center called Plaster House, where we care for them before and after surgery. It is truly fantastic that we can provide outreach, pre- and post-operative care, and the surgery for $500 a child – complete!

PLASTER HOUSE:  Plaster House is a rehabilitation center and short- or intermediate-term care facility for children following orthopedic and plastic surgery. We presently rent a small compound with 18 beds for up to 90 children!  We are therefore very blessed to be currently constructing a new 100-bed facility.  The Plaster House ministry has many needs:

$50 provides milk for a month to ALL the kids in Plaster House.

$100 provides a bed for the new Plaster House.

$5 feeds a child in the Plaster House.

NICU:
The Newborn Intensive Care Unit
is the only NICU in Arusha with its 1.5 million inhabitants. This year we have begun a subsidy program to allow all babies (premature, low-birth-weight, or complicated deliveries) to have access to it regardless of cost. – all are welcome from the entire community.  $300 is the average cost per baby for a three week stay in NICU.

NURSING SCHOOL: Tanzania has a 60% shortfall of nursing staff!  Hiring sufficient numbers of qualified nurses is a constant challenge.  In response, ALMC is now in the final stages of opening our own nursing school!  Nursing students will be asked to pay for their education and so we are looking for nursing scholarships to reduce the financial burden on these young students.  $1000 per scholarship.

FISTULA SURGERY:  We provide vesico-vaginal surgery for more than one hundred women per year at no cost to the patients. Average cost per operation: $300.

Several organizations (GHM, ELCA, & OBA) in the United States directly support ALMC and pass through 100% of contributions without deducting overhead. Contributions made through these organizations to the ALMC general fund or to any of the ALMC Special Services funds are deductible as charitable contributions for tax purposes in the United States (click logos to read more about these organizations):

Global Health Ministries: GHM is a major supporter of Selian and other Lutheran health work around the globe by providing project funding and procuring and shipping supplies to hospitals in need.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Division of Global Mission:
ELCA/DGM partners with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania and supports many mission and development projects in Tanzania.

Operation Bootstrap Africa:
A long time supporter of Selian, OBA serves to raise support for education and medical care in Africa.
